Classification Editing

Need to fix a few misclassified points? Most cloud LiDAR platforms force you to download the data and edit it in desktop software like TerraScan or CloudCompare. Lidarvisor lets you do it right in the browser.

The Classification Editing tools let you select and reclassify points using four different methods — brush, height, color, and intensity — directly in the 3D viewer.


Entering Edit Mode

  1. Load a project that has been processed (a classified point cloud must exist).
  2. In the project tree (left panel), find the Classified Point Cloud node.
  3. Click the "Edit Classification" button on that node.
  4. A floating toolbar appears over the 3D viewer — you are now in Edit Mode.

The Edit Toolbar

The floating toolbar provides the following tools:

Target Class Selector

At the top of the toolbar is a dropdown menu where you choose the destination class — the class you want to reassign selected points to. For example, if you want to change some vegetation points to ground, select "Ground" from the dropdown.

You can also select "Remove" to hide points entirely (useful for removing noise or unwanted objects).

Keyboard shortcuts: Press the number keys 0–9 to quickly switch between classes.

Apply to All Visible

A button that reassigns all currently visible points (all ticked classes in the project tree) to the target class. This is a bulk operation — use it carefully.

For example: if you have only "Low Vegetation" ticked and the target class is "Ground," clicking this button will reclassify all low vegetation points as ground.


Selection Tools

Lidarvisor provides four different ways to select points for reclassification:

Color Tool (Eyedropper)

Selects points based on their color. This is useful when a misclassified object has a distinctive color.

How to use:

  1. Click the Color Tool button in the toolbar.
  2. Click on a point in the viewer — the tool picks up its color.
  3. Adjust the tolerance slider to include similar colors (a low tolerance matches only very close colors; a high tolerance matches a wider range).
  4. Matching points are highlighted in yellow as a preview.
  5. Confirm to apply the reclassification to the highlighted points.

Example: A red car classified as "Building" — pick the red color, set a moderate tolerance, and reclassify the highlighted points as "Vehicle."

Height Tool

Selects points based on their elevation (height above ground or absolute elevation).

How to use:

  1. Click the Height Tool button.
  2. Set a minimum and/or maximum height threshold.
  3. Points within the height range are highlighted in yellow as a preview.
  4. Confirm to reclassify them.

Example: Low vegetation below 0.5 m that should be ground — set max height to 0.5 m and reclassify as "Ground."

Intensity Tool

Selects points based on their laser intensity value.

How to use:

  1. Click the Intensity Tool button.
  2. Set an intensity range (minimum and maximum values).
  3. Matching points are highlighted in yellow.
  4. Confirm to reclassify them.

Example: Water surfaces often have very low intensity — set a low intensity range to select water points that may have been missed by the AI.

Brush Tool

Selects points by painting over them with a virtual brush — similar to using a paint brush in an image editor.

How to use:

  1. Click the Brush Tool button.
  2. Click and drag over the point cloud — points under the brush are selected.
  3. Selected points are highlighted.
  4. The target class is applied to the selected area.

Best for: Small, precise corrections where you need to "paint" the correct classification onto a specific area.


Undo and Redo

Made a mistake? No problem:

  • Click Undo to reverse the last edit.
  • Click Redo to reapply an undone edit.

You can undo/redo multiple steps.


Saving Your Edits

Edits are not applied immediately to your point cloud file. They are stored as pending changes that you can review.

When you are satisfied with your corrections:

  1. Click Save in the edit toolbar.
  2. Lidarvisor merges your edits into the classified point cloud.
  3. A progress indicator shows the merge progress.

Syncing After Save

After saving, you may see a "Sync" button on the classified point cloud node in the project tree. Click it to refresh the viewer with the updated classification.


Exiting Edit Mode

To leave edit mode:

  1. Click Exit Edit Mode in the toolbar.
  2. If you have unsaved edits, a confirmation dialog appears asking whether you want to discard them.
  3. Confirm to exit, or cancel to go back and save first.

Tips for Effective Editing

Common Editing Scenarios

Misclassified ground under dense vegetation

Dense tree canopy can cause ground points to be classified as low vegetation. Use the Height Tool to select points below a certain height and reclassify them as Ground.

Building edges classified as vegetation

Overhanging roof edges sometimes get classified as vegetation. Zoom in, use the Brush Tool to paint over the affected area, and reclassify as Building.

Vehicles on a road

Cars parked on a road may be classified as Building or Unclassified. Use the Brush Tool to paint over the vehicle, then reclassify as Vehicle.

Power line points classified as vegetation

Wires running through tree canopy may be misidentified. Use the Height Tool or Intensity Tool (wires often have distinct intensity) to isolate them, then reclassify as Wire.

Noise points (birds, dust, sensor errors)

Random floating points above the scene. Use Height Tool with a high minimum height to select them, then set the target to Remove to hide them.
